IRAC 98 - Penascosa (Côa Park) visit     (European Rock Art)
IRAC 98, Vila Real (Portugal), International Rock-Art Congress, sept. 1998
Gavrinis engraved slab

Rock art, great site!
The Penascosa site is very important in the Côa Park (see more in TRACCE Online Bulletin #5), surely one of the most exciting. The best place to to find a contact with the Prehistoric Art. The area remains quite untouched, not beeing affected by the negative impact of the Pocinho Dam. The engraved panels border a quiet Côa river, like watching the animals while they were watering. In a very close site Palaeolithic material (Magdalenian stone tools) has been found. Horses and cows, Pyrenaic goats and scratched deers show a clear series of superimpositions. Not far, the Quinta de Ervamoira is a beautiful farm producing one of the best Porto Wines.
