The rock art to be submerged by the Alqueva dam has been shown to be of major pre-Historic significance. It is therefore absolutely necessary to immediately conduct further studies on these pictures, in order to at least document this cultural heritage properly. Most (!) of Portugal's rock-art heritage has been lost totally due to dam constructions without any documentation. Such a loss can not be tolerated once more. I personally, and certainly some other members of the German Society for Petroiconology, too, should be pleased to offer advice and help

Your country is all that you and your children's children have....Look after your country and it will look after you....Take what you need from your country, but NEED WHAT YOU TAKE. If you truly believe the dam is in the best interests of present and future generations, please consider that it could be delayed long enough to expedite the most thorough archaeological survey and rock art record possible to achieve in best current practice.....one that would stand for some time to come as a model to aspire to..... not a token attempt to wear with shame

The Upper Palaeolithic rock art in the Coa Valley, Portugal, was inscribed as a World Heritage property in 1998. It was inscribed under cultural criterion (i)& (iii). Portugal obviously has rock art of outstanding universal value and the significance of the rock art under consideration must be assessed. It is possible, that the rock art is as significant, or more significant, than that at the Coa Valley or other sites inscribed on the World Heritage List. Whatever the case, the destruction of the non renewable resource of the prehistory of mankind is a crime against history and against humanity. This year, we have seen the destruction of the Buddhist statues in the Bamyan Valley by the Taliban, this willful destruction of the World's heritage must stop.

European University Centre for Cultural Heritage
The European University Centre for Cultural Heritage was among the first promoters of the campaign in favour of the protection of the Guadiana rock art complex. The final statement signed by the participants to the meeting held in Ravello (I) last 5th May, addressed to national, communitarian and international institutions, was welcomed and appreciated by, among the others, Vlasta Stepova ; General rapporteur on the Cultural heritage of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe; Daniel Thérond -Chief of the Cultural Heritage Division of the Council of Europe; JacquesLegendre ; Senator of the French Republic. We strongly confirm our support to the petition concerning the Guadiana valley and we are deeply upset by the lost of such important assets that the building of the dam can involve

The information available today about the area which will be influenced by the dam shows that important natural and cultural resources will be destroyed and that the gain (electricity, work opportunities etc) will be minimal if any at all. A decision to stop the dam will be an example to the world of concern for environment (natural and cultural)
