  34. As part of the European tradition, please, do save the prehistorick rockart of our ancestors!
  35. As spanish environmental journalist I join your petition economista!
  36. As we destroy the natural environment and the record of our history, so goes the human spirit Please change your plans
  37. As with Foz Coa, this construction must be stopped
  38. At the very least, construction should stop until a proper inventory and evaluation can be done and alternatives considered for recording and protection of this priceless heritage resource! How could anyone question the reasonableness of such a recommendation? Will this electricity create something that is more valuable than what it destroys?
  39. Ata cando tanto desencontro co medio
  40. Board of Directors, New York Rivers United
  41. By destroying these images you are destroying your own cultural heritage and potential economic advantages through tourism. Many many people travel and go on holidays just to get glimpses of what truly are profound images of our past. For a nation such as Portugal with such a rich and dramatic history, I feel you are excluding your own people's right to their past and dishonouring the lives and memories of those without whom you would not even be here to make these sad decisions
  42. care about and value our world, our people, our past and future by protecting our rock-art
  43. changing watercourses ALWAYS ends up reducing the total amount of water available to the land

  49. COTA 112!!! There must be arranged a moratorium in the accomplishment of the dam project to record the rock art in the endangered zone and to save the testimonials of cultural heritage from destruction, before a serious field research is done in that area Por favor, no destruyan el Patrimonio Cultural Ibérico. Es nuestra seña de identidad al sur de Europa SIARB strongly supports the petition to stop the Alqueva Dam Project to preserve endangered prehistoric rock art archéologue
  50. Cota 139!!!
  51. cuida tu pasado para entender tu presente...
  52. Cultural preservation is the responsibility of all citizens There is no excuse for NOT recording cultural heritage sites. This must be done before flooding the region
  53. Cunha, no cunha, que lastima. Pois nao for now. Close-range photogrammetry? Recorded in Canada and US. To compare, how, if destroyed. Preserve. Bom dia

This is a shocking piece of cultural destruction!
This dam will not only destroy these important specimens of prehistoric art, but it will also endanger many wildlife species including the Iberian Lynx. A dam of smaller scale would provide sufficient water for the region. Please listern to the people and preserve this important area of natural beauty

  81. Having seen Aboriginal rock art - this also must be saved
  82. Healing systems around the world trace their roots to prehistoric hunter-gatherer societies, who documented their cosmologies in the form of rock art. Destrying them is destroying the most ancient texts we have - each one a first and only edition
  83. Historical Sites like these are to be treasured not destroyed
  85. Hope, this will support the campagne!
  86. How did this project that will devestate some of man's earliest communications ever get this far? Is the world indeed asleep?
  87. http://personales.unican.es/cachor/
  88. Huge dams in the Middle East have been disasterous. In this respect it is worthy of note that international companies have recently withdrawn tenders for a new dam on the River Euphrates.
  89. human history Vs. human present and future?
  90. Humanity has shown remarkable short sightedness when considering short term benefits vs. universal values. The US congress just passed a bill allowing oil drilling in the last protected wilderness in Alaska. Must we destroy everything ?
  91. I agree. They shouldn't shut this down! They should keep it up and let the whole world still be able to come and see it whenever they want Firm this petition and in the same address: Poets Republican Circle; Poets Against Columbus'Genocide and Iquierda Republicana de Burgos
  92. I am an American anthropologist living in Japan
  93. I am an International Business Consultant. I know that cultural and political decisions DO have an impact on how others see your country and affect their business decisions. Destroying your own cultural heritage is not a positive message. Would YOU want to do business with people who act like this?
  94. I am co-founder of Sacred Sites International Foundation and consider this to be a very sacred site that must be saved
  95. I am dismayed and appalled. You would have thought we would have learned our lesson by now
  96. I do urge that the dam is reconsidered, and this vital patrimony preserved The past must be preserved
  97. I fully agree with the petition
  98. I have visited the old and the new villages and I must say that if the Government says that it is trying to build the houses just as they were before, it is not true and everyone can see that. The new houses are awful. Although the government claims that the new village will only have houses that look like typically houses from that part of the country (Alentejo), that is not true. They are building some cheap huts to replace some very good houses. Not all of them are new, but some of the houses are and the Alqueva dam will do serious harm to the owners of these houses
  99. I hope your countrymen realize how important archeological sites are to their heritage and that they are not a renewable resource
  100. I like the , Rock Art . So I hereby sign the Petiton
  101. I live in a country with several water powerplants - they are ALL OBSOLET !!!!!!! because the KWH ( energy unit ) is TOO EXPENSIVE to built
  103. I saw the must of all Alqueva Rock Art in Portugal and Spain
  104. I strongly support the petition
  105. I strongly support the preservation of the paintings
  106. I strongly support the preservation of these irreplaceable and significant historic resources
  107. I think that Alqueva Rock Art must be preserved above all things
  108. I travel to see petroglyphs not dams!
  109. I was surprized to here of what was happening in portugal concerning the ancient rock art that has lasted so much longer than any nation or political power. The costs and manpower involved in constructing the Alqueva dam will become a burden on Portugal and other European Countries when the bill comes about....
  110. I wish to add my name to the petition condemning the destruction of hundreds of rock art sites threatened by the proposed Alqueva Dam. These sites represent one of the finest rock art concentrations in Europe and every effort must be made to preserve them for the future
  112. If it is too late to stop the project now, at least the time for thorough documentation should be provided The European University Centre for Cultural Heritage was among the first promoters of the campaign in favour of the protection of the Guadiana rock art complex. The final statement signed by the participants to the meeting held in Ravello (I) last 5th May, addressed to national, communitarian and international institutions, was welcomed and appreciated by, among the others, Vlasta Stepova ; General rapporteur on the Cultural heritage of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe; Daniel Thérond -Chief of the Cultural Heritage Division of the Council of Europe; JacquesLegendre ; Senator of the French Republic. We strongly confirm our support to the petition concerning the Guadiana valley and we are deeply upset by the lost of such important assets that the building of the dam can involve
  113. If the dam is really necessary to the economy, mesures should be taken to record as much as possible of the carvings in the Guadiana valley
  114. If we destroy all evidence of our past - what do we leave for future generations? These engravings are part of your cultural heritage. You suceeded with the Coa River engravings. May you suceed again As a geologist I am convinced that dams are the worse, unsafe and useless thing we can build Please save our ancient heritages
  115. if we don't preserve the past, what good is the future?
  117. I'm absolutely APPALLED that ANYONE would consider this barbaric destruction
  118. In addition this is an environmental disaster
  119. In my role of IFRAO-UNESCO Liaison Officer, IFRAO Representative of Italy, Director of the Prehistoric Art Museum, Teacher of Archaeological Museology, Polytechnic University of Turin, I give my full agreement to the Alqueva Petition.
  120. In New Zealand many of my own tribes best rock art heritage has been lost through dam development, denying the world this treasure. Please don't do the same to yours
  121. increible
  122. Insane development. Put the money in alternative (solar, wind) energy and organic agriculture projects instead
  123. It ceases to amaze me how people of this world continue to rid us of our past history...come on PEOPLE!!!! Stop destroying sacred history!!!
  124. It happened within my memory that memory has been flooded.. after Bamijian, also this?
  125. It is also very worrying to see the destruction of such a large area of mediterranean forest and shrubland, home to threatened species such as the spanish linx, imperial eagle, etc., for a project which would not seem to adapt to the future criteria of sustainable development. The financial advantages of the dam construction project also suggest important short falls behind the economic feasability of the project. what is created can also distroy the irreplacable
  126. It is irresponsible to have not properly mitigated the effect of inundation. At the very least proper archaeological and heritage survey and recording of the impacted area is a must for any enlightened nation
  127. It is sad when even the "sacred" is not considered so, to the powers that continue to destroy so much, in the name of progress. Stop the sensless destruction !!
  128. It is unthinkable that this could even happen! Please! save the rock art - stop the damn dam
  129. It seems that you can remove the surface of the rock art and preserve them at another proper sites
  130. Its a tragedy to lose history before we have absorbed it
  131. It's outreageous!
  132. just save it!!
  133. just stop it The documentation on this topic prooves that insufficient research is done before this mega-work started. Apart form other effects, it's a shame for the cultural heritage More research should be done

While I understand the need for power resources for the nation of Portugal, I have to wonder how much study has been done on alternatives to hydroelectric sources. The Tennesse Valley Authority had destroyed any number of areas of historic importance in my area, long before my birth. We are still left with energy problems in my area and nation despite of this. It is therefore absolutely necessary to immediately conduct further studies on these pictures, in order to at least document this cultural heritage properly. Most (!) of Portugal's rock-art heritage has been lost totally due to dam constructions without any documentation. Such a loss can not be tolerated once more. 269. The Cochiti Dam on the Rio Grande River and Navajo Reservoir on the San Juan River, both in New Mexico, USA, are near my home. Both have destroyed many petroglyphs and pictographs which were sacred to the Pueblo and Navajo Indian tribes here. These dams, as a result, are open wounds in our consciences, and have diminished the archaeological and religious legacy of the Americas. The same thing will result if the Alqueva Dam is constructed. The famous Elizabethan English poet, John Donne, wrote, "No man is an island unto himself. Ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee." In other words, the loss of this ancient legacy of spiritual images is a wound we all bear. It is a loss not just to the Pueblo or Navajo Indians, the people of Portugal, or even the entire European Union. It is a diminution of the spiritual heritage of all mankind, regardless of race, color, or culture. Think of these serious matters. These losses are like amputations to the world body. re near my home near my home

  274. The destruction of the Tejo River sites should be enough vandalism. All responsable persons should come together to do the necessary to protect the Guadiana River sites for further generations. This cultural heritage survived thousands of years, but now the lack of restraint of one generation will destroy everything for ever
  275. The earth as a mother would request the same respect as your own mothers
  276. The EU must protect the environment as well as the economy. Environment = Economy, Economy = Environment!
  277. The fact that this art was not included in the decision making process begs the question, "what else has not been taken into account?"
  278. The Guadiana rock art should be preserved for humanity -- it is no one's to destroy. There is so much we do not yet know about rock art, and if flooded the opportunity to learn from it would be lost, probably forever.
  279. The industrialist dams belong to another era and are not only a crime against prehistoric art but also a crime against environment that will have azardous consecuencies on the ecosystems, biodiversity and human sustainable development
  280. The information available today about the area which will be influenced by the dam shows that important natural and cultural resources will be destroyed and that the gain (electricity, work opportunities etc) will be minimal if any at all. A decision to stop the dam will be an example to the world of concern for environment (natural and cultural) We need to study that prehistoric rock art site, at least we can leave the memory to our children
  281. The only reason to don´t destroy the past is money. Only money can make the world go round... The economics interests is much more important and all the rest is theory. That´s "our" world.
  282. The only way to understand the present is to understand the past
  283. The past history of humans is so yet undecided that any destruction of Rock Art Sites is a destruction of humankind
  284. The Upper Palaeolithic rock art in the Coa Valley, Portugal, was inscribed as a World Heritage property in 1998. It was inscribed under cultural criterion (i)& (iii). Portugal obviously has rock art of outstanding universal value and the significance of the rock art under consideration must be assessed. It is possible, that the rock art is as significant, or more significant, than that at the Coa Valley or other sites inscribed on the World Heritage List. Whatever the case, the destruction of the non renewable resource of the prehistory of mankind is a crime against history and against humanity. This year, we have seen the destruction of the Buddhist statues in the Bamyan Valley by the Taliban, this willful destruction of the World's heritage must stop.
  285. The world doesn't need another damn dam. The Art is our human history. Protect and save it The government has an obligation to all future generations to presrve prehistoric rock art. It should not treat this responsability lightly.
  286. The world must stop the destruction of every art object, it's our duty El patrimonio cultural no nos fue heredado por nuestros antepasados, nos fue prestado por nuestros hijos y las futuras generaciones de la humanidad, es nuestra obligación conservarlo
  287. There are alternatives. The very least of such alternatives is a sufficient delay for a rescue archaeology project, but so much more could be done to save the rock art This would be a disaster and an archaeological tragedy
  288. There are moments in life where we have to choose. I understand the dam will be built, but this is no reason to fill it in straight away. I hope the portuguese governement, who was so brave in the Coa issue, will understand the enourmous importance of the Guadiana rock art and archaeology, and will concede at least one more year for an open and international intensive survey. Every day of field work reveals unantended new discoveries. Who may believe that within a few months "all" will be recorded? Our colleagues working in the Guadiana, both in Portugal and Spain, work very hard, and deserve all our respect, but they are no super heroes. International support must be given. Meanwhile, I have to choose, and I choose to stand in the side of the heritage, and not the one of silence. I just returned from recording some of the many glyph sites that are going to be submerged along the Guadiana River. The glyphs are fantastic, intriguing and inspirating. It's impossible to believe that the sites were not discovered years ago by the contract archaeologists who supposedly surveyed the impact zone. Many panels are in plain view near the river. It is a vast and wonderful corpus of pristine images. To lose this to a questionable dam project that may produce almost no real benefits to the people of the Alqueva region is disgraceful. Nonetheless, the dam is going ahead without regard to the rock art. Unless officials come to their senses and stop this project now, the Guadiana prehistoric treasure willl be lost forever. Once again, an important piece of our mysterious cultural heritage will be stolen by mindless developers and short-sighted politicians. There is still a little time left to reverse course and avoid this disaster, if we all work together. Spread the word ASAP; turn up the pressure!
  289. There is no realistic future that is not based on the past - keep our precious records
  290. There is nothing more fragil than our historical heritage. We ought to save it not only for us, but for the next generations as well Rock art is INVALUABLE There is more than just rock art to be considered, we must preserve all mounds and standing stones.

  292. There's much to know about rock art,if we distroy such a big quantity we're destroying our future knowledge. The present art is an evolution of the past one,we look back to Greece and Rome, why not to Iron Age?
  293. These resources are a part of all humanity's history. They are too precious to destroy
  294. These sites are important to the cultural patrimony of Portugal and the EU. Please reconsider the potentially negative ecological and cultural aftereffects of this dam project. This rock art may hold the key to understanding where the Iberian people originated. This makes it even more important to preserve the petroglyphs Destroying these ancient "pieces of humanity" would be like destroying your most sacred Cathedral and your National Museum of Art with all of its contents to construct a highway. Please relocate your water project, you can.

  316. Unlike dams or any other modern structure built by man as a temporary convenience or solution, great art whether ancient or new is not a 'renewable resource' which can be recycled or recreated. More planning needs to be implemented on projects when the destruction of human thought, i.e. art and especially ancient art, is deemed expendable in the name of projects which have a finite lifetime of useful service measured in mere centuries, not millennia. Let us think of the board first cut too short to use and, no matter how many times it is recut, it will still be too short. Will the destruction of this ancient rock, for what are at best temporary 'fixes', justify the same logic or argument of denying the mistake of the board cut too short because of poor planning by knowingly repeating the mistake? It is best to get the true measure and worth of the project before beginning irreversible actions which are typically regretted in hindsight. Once the artwork is destroyed, it is gone, cut too short, forever Please protect this irreplacable and invaluable cultural resource
