Inside the alpine valleys, engravings and rock paintings are evidence of a remote and almost unknown past and they are often the oldest cultural heritage of our mountain territories. The shelter of the Balma dei Cervi in Crodo is an archaeological site with extraordinary prehistoric paintings. The Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities – Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the Provinces of Biella, Novara, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and Vercelli, manages the site and promotes and coordinates its research and public engagement

Rischio e tutela – Danger and protection

È proprio l’azione dell’uomo, purtroppo, a presentare i maggiori pericoli.

The paintings of the Balma dei Cervi-Shelter of the Deer are a unique site in the Alps in regard to the interesting themes of the scenes depicted, for the excellent conservation of the figures and for the size of the rock art panel. As fascinating as they are delicate, however, they are subject to the deterioration of time and to the risks of damage caused by humans. Unfortunately, the potential human impact presents the greatest danger to the site’s conservation.

As an example, in Piedmont, gunshot irreparably damaged the painted rock art of Pont Raut in Val Germanasca during World War II. A few years ago, the rock paintings of the Rocca di Cavour site was first harmed by a climbing nail and then almost erased by the damage caused from writing in synthetic enamel on the wall. After having resisted the ravages of time for several millennia, they are now, unfortunately, almost completely lost, destroyed in seconds by careless and irresponsible hands.

They are rare, precious and extremely delicate cultural assets, which must be preserved with the utmost care and benefit from the best possible protection to guarantee their conservation. The calcitic crust of the painted wall of the Balma dei Cervi, which in part contributed to the preservation of the paintings, has evidence of surface exfoliation or detachment in several areas. After millennia of looking over the Valle Antigorio, visits by enthusiasts and tourists who, perhaps unconsciously, get too close to the rock art could destroy them forever.

Studio e valorizzazione – Study and development

In addition to these considerations, is the difficulty in access due to the physical characteristics of the site, a steep mountain slope to reach the site and an adjoining cliff on which no safety parapets can be placed. These environmental conditions impede the possibility of establishing a site which is accessible to the public. The creation of the Virtual Museum remedies these critical issues and constitutes the first important step towards a necessary tool for the research, enjoyment and accessibility of such an important site.

The project called To the root of the prehistory (Alle Radici della Preistoria), is an integrated plan for the documentation, development, and the communication of the site information and has seen the participation of various contributors. This has been possible thanks to the Compagnia di San Paolo’s funding, in the context of calls for contributions dedicated to the enhancement of cultural heritage. These contributors include the Superintendency for the coordination and scientific supervision, the Municipality of Crodo for the organization of the project, and the Cooperativa Archeologica Le Orme dell’Uomo for undertaking the work in question. This is a favorable synergy, which fits well with the institutional tasks of the ‘Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities’ with the local and economic bodies. Regional involvement has been achieved with the creation of an educational training workshop, the involvement of young archaeology students in the documentation of the site and the creation of a competition with the aim of producing an artistic mural in the town of Crodo to promote the paintings of the Balma dei Cervi site.

From a scientific point of view, it was thanks to the detailed archaeological-iconographic study coordinated by the Superintendency that the graphic elements and the photographic, morphological and digital documentation were obtained. This was necessary for an in-depth knowledge of the figurative elements present at the Balma dei Cervi and for their archaeological classification. Further research is in progress, such as the analysis of the paint crusts and pigments in collaboration with the University of Ferrara, which will provide other essential data to understand how the figures were created and, in the event that organic agglutinants are identified, to help with greater precision in allocating a chronological timeframe for the paintings. This could also enable the absolute dating of the substances used for their creation.

Considering that throughout the Alps the shelters with known cave paintings number barely twenty, the Ossola area, with the recent discoveries of the Balma dei Cervi at Crodo, together with the painted wall of the Balma del Capretto (the shelter of the goat) at Croveo in Valle Devero, and the painted figure of Balm ‘d la Vardaiola at Alpe Veglia, is home to three prehistoric painted panel sites and takes on a prominent role in the context of alpine rock art paintings.

The Ossola territory is thus of important heritage value from the most ancient peopling with the rock art paintings to the wealth of paintings over the centuries, from the Parish Church of Baceno to the famous landscape painters (the “Paesaggisti“).
