Balma dei Cervi, at the roots of our prehistory

One of the most important rock shelters with prehistoric paintings in the whole of the Alpine Arc is found in the territory of Crodo. Over 100 painted images have been recorded, including 30 schematic male and female human figures, some with upraised arms others facing downwards, almost all of which are without a head, including some possible representations of birth scenes..

Crodo, Balma dei Cervi (Shelter of the Deer), prehistoric rock paintings

One of the most important painted rock art sites found in the Alpine Arc is situated along a vertical cliff and stretches 6 meters across, protected by a rock overhang on a mountain slope covered with dense forests in the territory of Crodo. The shelter (balma in the local dialect) is on a steep, almost inaccessible ledge, and frequented by deer as a nocturnal refuge, from which it takes its name.

At least two shades of red pigments were used to paint the figures, red and brownish-red, this was applied with fingers, plant fibers or wooden sticks. It is probable that ochritic hematite – red ochre, an iron oxide, was used after being pulverized and made into a liquid with water or other binders, perhaps organic. The figures have been painted both on the clear surfaces of the wall covered with natural crusts of white calcite and on the dark gray areas without such incrustations.

The paintings, discovered in 2008 by Livio Lanfranchi di Crodo, but previously photographed in the late ’70s, were documented by the archaeologists of Footsteps of Man, specialists of rock art in Valcamonica and the Alps, with the scientific coordination of the Archeology Superintendence of Fine Arts and Landscape for the Provinces of Biella, Novara, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and Vercelli. They are currently (2019) undergoing further research.

Cosa è raffigurato? – What is depicted?

Of the 100 painted images, and 2 engraved, 26 are schematic human figures, male and female, variously depicted with upraised arms or with arms facing downwards and wavy, in apparent movement or possibly depicted in an upside down position; they are almost all headless, some even missing arms or legs, with an “anchor” like shape – and in some cases they seem to hold a bow or a stick.

The Balma dei Cervi-Shelter of the Deer also stands out for more than twenty alignments of dots in the form of lines, circular forms, ring shapes, “V” shapes and eyeglass shapes, which very often accompany, trace or surround the human figures; in some cases (sector E) the dots overlap the human figures, in a darker shade of red. In the Piedmontese territory the prehistoric paintings of the Rocca di Cavour also display the juxtaposition of schematic human figures and rows of dots.

Among the Balma paintings it is also possible, with some difficulty, to distinguish quadrupeds, perhaps sheep, positioned vertically. There is a curious circular figure with four internal dots, vaguely reminiscent of a large-scale ladybug, an insect which is present in large numbers, at certain times of the year, on the rocky wall of the Balma.

The painted figures are arranged in six groups, each of which corresponds to a sector, identified by letter. A further small sector houses a few filiform or non-figurative incisions.

It is probable that a number of ‘scenes’ are present, or in any case possible symbolic juxtapositions, perhaps with mythological narratives. Despite the difficulty in interpreting these we can observe: couples and groups of human figures (sectors D, E), men in a line (sector A), and one inverted human figure near two vertical quadrupeds (sector C, could these be jumping off the cliff?). Some figures with open and upward facing legs could represent a birthing scene, albeit schematic (sectors A, E), as are perhaps some of the depictions on other rocks in the Piedmontese Alpine Arc (such as in Valgrana). Furthermore, the dynamism of the depictions of some characters may suggest dance movements.

Documentazione – Documentation

The painted wall has been carefully documented, combining the tracing of the painted images in a scale of 1: 1 with the data obtained from close-up photographic images, that were subjected to digital filters to increase the contrast, through the use of chromatic decorrelation adjustments (DStretch software), to highlight otherwise invisible details. High-resolution zenith panoramic photo processes have been used to create 360-degree photomosaic panoramic shots and three-dimensional digital models.

Visita e Museo Virtuale – Visit and Virtual Museum

Due to the difficulty of access and the extreme fragility of the paintings, the Balma is currently closed to the public. But as the public cannot go to the Shelter of the Deer, it is the Shelter of the Deer that can come to them instead: the Virtual Museum of the Balma dei Cervi of Crodo is open 7 days a week and 24 hours a day, it is both easily accessible from a fixed location as well as from a smartphone. We invite you to visit this fascinating rock art shelter at www.balmadeicervi.it.

The Virtual Museum is enhanced by all the documented material collected. Owing to the high definition of the panoramic shots, the color manipulations with DStretch, the examination of the graphic reproductions and tracings of the paintings, and the ability to turn the whole wall and its sectors into a three-dimensional tool, the virtual visit is more effective and in-depth than what would normally be visible. The panoramic tour allows the visitor, as well as the scholar, to immerse themselves in the beautiful natural environment of the site and the rocky cliff, and unveils closely and in detail every scene, every figure, every dot, highlighting details otherwise invisible to the naked eye.

A quando risalgono le figure? – How old are the figures?

The paintings of the Balma dei Cervi are very old, certainly thousands of years old; images on stone that have survived millennia to pass on messages from a distant past, as fascinating as they are difficult to decipher, the key to reading them having been lost over time.

They exhibit stylistic parallels to the most ancient phases of Iberian schematic art (Cueva de los MurcielagosCueva del Castillo de Monfrague, end of 6th-5th millennium BC), with some “dynamic” anthropomorphic figures linked to elements of megalithic art (menhir of Pierre-aux-Fées of Sant-Micaud, Saône-et-Loire – F, mid-5th millennium BC) and of the Gaban shelter, near Trento – Italy) (with images on a boar bone handle, recent phase of the Gaban group, 4900-4700 BC cal.). Consequently, they can be attributed on a stylistic basis to the Ancient or Middle Neolithic period. However, they also have an affinity with the schematic anthropomorphic figures of Valcamonica (the schematization of male and female sexual attributes, the upper limbs as a curved U-shape or an angular U-shape) dating from the Middle-Late Bronze Age to the Late Bronze Age (16th -9th century BC).

Therefore, in the first case, they date back to over 6,000 years ago and to more than 3,000 years ago in the second case.
