AN UPGRADE

The Bulletin has been upgraded to a new CMS package, with a complete page restyling. All covers, papers and pictures since 1996 are here, alive again, including TRACCE first issues. While maintaining as much as possible their original aspect, old “static” pages have been imported into the new format, and the inner search engine now embraces the whole TRACCE site.

1996 January, first TRACCE issue

NEW FEATURES You will find not only a restyling, but also some new features, notably the opportunity of adding photo-galleries and OA (Open-Access) documents.Regarding the first, it represents a powerful and particularly suitable tool to illustrate rock-art panels and sites. Each contributor will be able to add photo-galleries, to enrich papers, or simply to share a little or a lot of visual data; the task of uploading pictures and completing captions is simple and effective. In the same way each author will be able to upload her/his own paper-related pictures. The Open-Access feature is devoted to re-publishing, and sharing online, already-printed rock art-related papers, mostly coming from reviews or journals. In this way more documents, often not easy to locate and/or to obtain, will be available for rock art researchers and followers. The inline viewing, directly embedding the paper into the online page with customizable dimensions, makes the reading easier. The OA feature is available not only for published papers in their PDF version, but also for slide communications, presented in a PPT form at congresses or public lectures. Obviously all copyrights for texts and pictures must belong, in both cases, to the author. TRACCE won’t claim any copyright for the submitted material.

Top menu is self evident: the main TRACCE and rupestre.net sections are here indicated. Regarding the content section, a Paper Slider occupies the top of the page. It is able to show in sequence all the papers of a chosen category, which will be changed from time to time.

New additions also for the left sidebar: the entire archive is contained in two dropdown lists, the first organised by months, the second by categories. A customisable and auto-updating general index page is also present: the listing order (alphabetical or chronological) of all the more than 300 TRACCE papers may be inverted simply by clicking on each column title. The entire categorising process is now much more complete and effective. Besides that, a single line contains the links to all TRACCE old issues, while a gallery shows nine random pictures taken from TRACCE photo-galleries.

Last but not least, a button explains how “a donation a day keeps the banners away”: a nod is as good as a wink, as they say …

The ISSN TRACCE Online Rock Art Bulletin code is ISSN 2281-972X

In entrambi i casi, naturalmente, tutti i diritti di copyright devono appartenere all’autore.

1996 November, fifth TRACCE issue

TRACCE WEB-HISTORY, A FEW WORDSThis is the third TRACCE “refurbishment”. The first thirteen issues (1996-2001), which may be now treated as a web-archaeology matter, were published online with an irregular issue rate, grouping a certain number of papers in each publication. Page style, marked by the title logo, changed four times during these issues. A static pure html code was always applied. So, starting from January 11 1996 – issue dedicated to Davide Pace, discoverer of the Valtellina rock art – TRACCE has been the first online-published rock art related bulletin. It was originally hosted, till issue #10 (1998 May), by the well-known free hosting service named Geocities, under the section, unmeaningful but effective, of “Athens/2996” – also “rainforest/3982” was utilised for TRACCE 5; the first TRACCE URL was http://www.geocities.com/Athens/2996/tracce1.html.

Even if it is still possible to find TRACCE old pages through the Internet Archive Wayback Machine or Geocities republishing sites (like Reocities or OoCities), issues you’ll find here maintain all their original content and aspect: so please choose them, also and mainly for URLs quoting. After Geocities, TRACCE and Footsteps of Man moved to rupestre.net, from October 1998 till now.

TRACCE 13 title-logo

Since October 2002 a new system has been chosen, interrupting the series of numbered issues containing, each one, a group of papers – which were anyway re-activated in the 2012 refurbishmnet – and employing the method of posting papers singly. To facilitate the task, and to switch to dynamic html pages, a Content Management System was introduced, namely PHP-Nuke, based on PHP code and MySQL databases. PHP-Nuke has been one of the first freeware softwares of this category. The last version (2009) is no longer freeware. During recent years TRACCE has suffered from various hacking attacks and defacing attempts, obliging the administrator to stop almost all community-related features, like forum, messaging, downloads and so on. Even the entire papers and pictures-editing process was damaged.

The third step is reached with this new TRACCE 2012 version; its “birthday” is March 20, the equinox day. We hope you will like it: please feel free to send comments, suggestions or ideas. On top of all this you will be able to keep in touch with TRACCE editors by the contact form linked from the top menu bar. Advice or simple messages are welcome. If on the contrary you want to become a TRACCE author, by sending your papers and/or your pictures – English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese are all accepted, or any other language if accompanied by one of these –, please use the registration form: you’ll reach it not only from the top menu bar, but also from the left sidebar; registration details are explained in the relevant page. Both in registration and contact form TRACCE and Footsteps of Man email is concealed in order to avoid spam problems.

We hope that this new restyling will be able to lead to an improved, easier and more agreeable user interface, and will attract not only more readers but also more contributors.

Again welcome to all rock art researchers and followers! And please, please write (and re-write) to and for TRACCE Online Rock Art Bulletin, won’t you?
