I have just seen your report on the Swastika Stone near Ilkley, West Yorkshire. I know it well. Not far away, on the same moorland slopes art the Cow & Calf Rocks. Many years ago I went to a lecture in which someone presented a theory that these may have served as a kind of Sphynx. It is possible to see a face on the largest rock. Maybe a natural feature - maybe not. Perhaps it may be of interest to you. I live several miles away now but perhaps a colleague may help? If I can be of further assistance please let me know. Sincerely - Jack Tempest.

I am searching for information about the process of small scale pine tar extraction in Europe prior to the 20th century, particularly in Scotland, Ireland and England. This is farm level industry I am talking about, not commercial. I also need information about the process of producing lye water for soap making at the family level in Europe. (I need as much technical details as possible.) So, what's this got to do with rock art? Well it seems that some of the early European settlers in the Appalachian Mountain region of the eastern United States were into using rocks with a carving very similar to the "peace" sign in the process of tar and lye water manufacture. Present day researchers call these carvings "tar burner rocks" and consider them to be "Euro-American Petroglyphs". We know these carvings have been around for over two hundred years and I am trying to determine if this methodology of tar extraction was brought over by European immigrants, invented independently by those people after they settled the back country, or if it may have been a Native American carving that European settlers adapted to their process of tar extraction. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. Tommy Charles Archaeologist South Carolina Institute of Archaeology University of South Carolina Columbia, SC 29208

Hi Rockers, We would like to ask your attention for our new community website on prehistoric abstract rock art in England and Scotland. It's about a modest corner of the rock-art world; 5000 years old abstract motifs on outcrop rock and boulders. In fact they are "signs of a lost message" since the meaning of the motifs is still unknown. You may find interesting articles and a lot of photos. Enjoy these enigmatic images of the late Stone- and early Bronze-Age. You might even consider to become a member of our international community; you're most welcome!

I have been fascinated with petroglyphs, with their energy and bold simplicity. I am interested in creating my own "rock art", art in the petroglyph style. I feel that to capture the right spirit, that it is important to make my own paints, in the same way that the original petroglyph artists did. Does anyone have any recipes, instructions, etc on how to go about making paints for "rock art"?

My son, age 7, visited his first, (and mine as well), pictograph cave near Landusky, Montana. He was enthralled, so much so that he picked pictographs in the local area as the subject for his entry in the local history fair. His only prior contact with the subject matter was a school visit to a local Bureau of Land Management office, where the general subject of cave art was discussed. I was pleasantly suprised at his retention of the information given there, and his readily given interpretations of what we saw at this site. I'm searching the web for information which may help him discover the origin of the local cave art as well as that in other areas of Montana. Thank you for your consideration.

Many petroglyphs of the sun are in fact "compound sun/eye symbols" that were inspired by ancient observations of the "Eye of God" that is clearly manifested in the skies during most (if not all) total solar eclipses. The totally eclipsed sun does bear a striking similarity in appearance to the pupil and iris of a gigantic "cosmic eye" staring down from the heavens. The occulting disk of the moon clearly mimics the pupil of an human eye while the rays and streamers of the sun's corona shining out around this black "hole in the sky" closely resemble the muscle structure of the iris. There is abundant evidence that this "Eye of God" profoundly influenced ancient humanity's religious beliefs in all parts of the world. The sun petroglyphs on the "Stone of the Seven Suns" at Dowth, Ireland are virtually identical to a scientific astronomical drawing of the 1841 total solar eclipse that appears in the Memoirs of Britain's Royal Astronomical Society. My "Web Sight" titled "Eye of God" (at the URL given above) presents compelling evidence that this "Eye of God" that is manifested during total solar eclipses is the inspiration of these and many other "compound sun/eye symbol" petroglyphs. Evidence derived from some of these ancient rock art representations of total solar eclipses tends to suggest that at least some prehistoric humans understood that total solar eclipses were caused by our only moon covering our sun. I look forward to rock art experts' response to my research as expounded in "Eye of God". Sincerely, Robin Edgar

!!SOS Guadiana Rock Art!! http://www.PetitionOnline.com/Alqueva/petition .html Please Sign this petition (at the link above) to help save over a thousand important and beautiful prehistoric petroglyphs. The rock art sites are along the Guadiana River in both Portugal and Spain. They are in the impact zone of the new but not quite completed Alqueva Dam reservoir. The glyphs, which may be at least 5,000 years old and possibly more than 10,000 years old, are prehistorically significant and unique to this area of Iberia and the world. They are both a scientific and cultural treasure. Despite the recent discovery of the rock art -- headstrong and uncaring developers and politicans refuse to stop the project and, instead, plan to fill the reservoir at the end of 2001. If the project isn't abandoned, the rock art sites will disappear under murky and polluted waters. In addition to destruction of the glyphs, the reservoir will result in major ecological damage by submerging one of the last wildernesses in Europe. Existence of the rock art became publc in late April, when independent environmental researchers accidently discovered a few of the numerous sites. The well-paid contract archaeologists -- who did the official (and possibly incompetent) surveys for the developer (EIDA) and the Portuguese government -- failed to find and report the clearly visible rock art. Because of this "oversight", the dam was approved. If existence of the rock art sites had been disclosed in a timely manner, during initial consideration of the Alqueva Dam, authorities probably would not have given the go-ahead for the project. Adding to questionable nature of this unfolding developmental tragedy are the findings of recent independent studies. Apparently, the dam is unlikely to produce any of the benefits that promoters and politicians claim. This means that the destruction of the rock art sites and the local environment is quite unnecessary and meritless. Help stop this project now. Sign the petition as soon as possible. It will only take a minute -- http://www.

Covadonga: First Colombian-French Expedition. Recent investigations concerning Colombian Indigenous groups are made difficult because it has not been possible to find descriptions or materials that permit one to broach study problems with sufficient theoretic tools to respond to some of the many questions posed by these investigations. Nevertheless, there do exist serious attempts on the part of some contemporary authors to coherently explain the spirit world and material concerning the cosmology of the pre-hispanic inhabitants. Some of these studies were done by Reichel Dolmatoff for the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, and Ann Osborne in the area north of the Cordillera Oriental. These investigations broach the most obvious aspects of indigenous daily life but generally don’t emphasize the presence of rock art in their territory. The Colombo-French Group for Rock Art Investigation consisting of GIPRI and some members of the National Center for French Scientific Investigations CNRS made an expedition at the beginning of 1998 with the object of initiating a process of archeological and ethnological documentation of the Arhuaco community in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. This expe-dition was one of the first attempts to systematically document a rock art site in the Covadonga area near Nabusimaque finishing with important results. Realizing that the Chibcha macro-linguistic family extended over a great part of Central America, and that the surviving tribes of the Sierra are their direct descendants, the most important findings of the Covadonga study have been the discovery of the similarities of the Covadonga rock art forms to other zones in Colombia and other parts of South America. The Paleolithic caves of France. The 1994 discovery of the Chauvet cave in the Ariege region, France, is without a doubt a goal for those who believed it is indispensable to take care in the analysis and with the interpretations of the art, meaning, and function of the rock art. It’s discovery constitutes a new opportunity for the examination of the state of the art investigation of Paleolithic rock art. Confronting traditional thinking, it is certain that the Chauvet cave opens new options and disintegrates the interpretations of Breuil and Leroi-Gourhan. Diverse research groups are working at different stages of study on the murals and the floor of the cave. The academic world will be surprised in the next few years when the findings coordinated by Michel Garcia are published. Myth, rite and petroglyph. Purpose of rock art in the Caqueta River, colombian Amazon. This article describes investigations by the author since 1978 in the middle trajectory of the Caqueta River (colombian Amazon). It summarizes historically the studies realized by different authors, emphasizing specifically the work of E. Reichel considered to be the most methodic and serious investigator of everyone who has studied this area. Hundreds of new sites never before described have been found based on his explorations. The petroglyph zone has been a native culture habitation site since very ancient times (9,300 BP). Amongst the surviving native cultures there exists a rich ritual and mythic tradition, that is the backbone and guide for the respective indigenous communities. Finally, the author explores the hypothesis of the persistence of some myths (the ancestral serpent) in current day oral tradition that well could orient possible interpretations of rock art graphics. Recording and documentation of alteration causes and deteriorations. The study of rock art forms needs a complex and varied group of investigators from different disciplines, who have been entrusted to search, document, record and preserve records of the findings. This last aspect (the conservation), it is one of the fields least studied in the country. The importance of this work is that because of lack of knowledge of causes of deterioration and destruction of rock art sites, it is impossible to have an adequate cleaning and conservation process. The lichens, fungi, weeds, precipitation, solar radiation, etc., have destroyed the rock art. If this deterioration and destruction process is not stopped, we have lost this valuable cultural treasure. This work is a simple way to begin this kind of in-country study because it uses tools (recording forms) to record the elements which alter and disturb the rock art. DOCUMENTOS JEROGLIFICOS PRECOLOMBINOS José M. Uribe Th. Pre-Columbian Hieroglyphs. The study of Colombian rock art was neglected for 20 years after Miguel Triana completed his studies. At the end of the 1930’s there appeared a summary of the investigation by Uribe, Borda and Muller, concerning rock art in Colombia, specifically art in the highland plains area of the states of Cundinamarca and Boyaca. The emphasis of this study was the origin and “development” of writing. These investigators believed the pictographs and petroglyphs represented a process leading up to phonetic symbols, and therefor, only if you understand rock art as a structural part of a language, can you delve into its meaning and content. One of the most important elements of this study is the divulging and documenting of the numerous zones and rocks containing rock art. This is important if you keep in mind that the majority of the previous investigators in this field in the highlands had dedicated their time mostly to copy and reproduce the work of Triana and Botero (see: Rupestre bulletin No. 1), continuing in this manner to promulgate past errors and descriptions of the rock art and the sites. archaeology find: on the west side of the san jaqauin valley in california two water wells were drilled hundreds of feet deep at a place aproximately 10 miles east of highway I-5. A piece of Redwood tree came out of the drill hole during drilling. This wood was put aside and fossilized/petrified in a few days or less after it came out of the hole. There are no naturally occuring Redwood trees in the valley floor. Does this wood indicate there was an unidentified naturally occuring chemical mixture produced during the tumolteous period when the Dinosaurs and plants got buried that produced a modifing effect on formerely surface located material???? If an unknown process did occur during the tumolteous period this could account for gross inaccuracies of Carbon Dating, right? How could the Redwood piece from the well have remained intact for millions of years? Obviously it got buried more recently than that and probably with the Dinosaurs, too. This story was told to me by my Grandfather who saw the fossilizing Redwood tree piece. Ive never known this story to be a joke.

Hello, I'm researching ancient petroglyphs and other sites that contain any solar symbolism for an art project that involves a comparative study to the Latvian Sun Dainas. Please visit my URL for info, and please email me with comments or suggestions. Any input is greatly appreciated.

I am researching the relationship btween the rock art in the middle east and the cultures of peoples of the bible, and am looking for any correlations between the two. If anyone knows of anything that they think I should look at please email it to me.

INTERPRETATION OF "DEAD MAN" OF LASCAUX Hai, I'm orntihologist and casually learnt, that interpretation of "dead man" scene from Lascaux cave is a mystery. Is it still true? To my eyes, "bird on a stick" perfectly shows hunting decoy. Such decoys were still used in modern times for hunting Black Grouse in Eastern Europe. Stuffed bird (or bird dummy) is mounted on a stick, resembling a real branch as much as possible. If "dead man" shows one coherent scene, the barbed line nearby are another perch (with cross pole mounted on the top to lure the coming birds to rest). The man is wearing stuffed bird head as a camouflage (such masks were used recently by game hunters from Africa and Pakistan). The scene may be named "LUCKLESS BIRD TRAPPER". I'm not cave art researcher, I just thought this may be of interest and found Your forum. If it is wrong forum, I'm talking nonsense, or there is better explanation, or this interpretation is well known, then please, enlighten me on priva. Jerzy jerzyd@ibb.waw.pl

Anybody out there who is/was subscribed to this list in the last couple of years interested in the rock paintings found in the Algerian and Libyan Tassili's, the Algerian/Libyan Tadrart-Akakus sites and the Gilf Kebir/Al Uwaynat sites in Egypt? I'm doing a doctorate on "Altered States in Saharan Rock Art" ('Shamanism' to one or two of you!)and am hoping to find like-minded travelling companions who are interested in joining me in the Libyan Sahara from September 2001 onwards? I anticipate being in the Sahara for at least 6-8 weeks, but this may well be extended over christmas and the New Year (2002) depending on levels of interest, additional drivers, overlanders, anthropologists, archaeologists, geologists, personal itineries and the like. So, any out there who are interested, please send an email and, if you wish, you may outline your interests, skills, experiences, even your agendas or itineries. I can't promise luxury hotels (just campsites and Zeribahs) nor a comfortable ride (I have a Toyota Lancrusier VX so its quite comfortable over long distances, I can ssure you, but the rough terrain might not be to everyone's liking!). What can I can offer? well, at least, the usual, good food, good company, a taste of the Sahara, its rock art, its people and its wildlife. I generally go with good close friends of mine who've been driving in the desert for decades (backup, experience, company). They know the desert terrain better than any body else I know in France. Other interested parties are a couple of Germans, a couple of Brits, at least one Hungarian, plus a Swiss, a Norwegian, and at least two Americans. Hope to hear from any who are interested Please send Emails to "prhaupt@dial.pipex.com" attention of Renate or Al Faour thanks!

Anybody have any idea/information where I can obtain reviews of North African Rock Art research; Libya, Algeria, Egypt for my doctorate? Need them for a Literature Review. Also, anybody interested in joining my small team in the Libyan Sahara? I'm in Libya from, probably end of September 2001 onwards, 6 plus weeks all-terrain driving in 4x4, searching and looking out for rock art sites - my doctorate is on "Altered States" (i.e. like shamanism but a bit different than shamanism per se. The images I study are therianthropomorphic. If anybody interested, please email me

I have been studying the influence of eclipses, especially total solar eclipses, on ancient humanity's religious consciousness since 1992 when I was confronted by an image of the "Eye of God" that is manifested in total solar eclipses. I have very good reason to believe that many, if not most, rayed sun petroglyphs, which are also recognized as "radiant divine eye" symbols or "compound sun/eye symbols" were originally inspired by this "Eye of God" that appears in the sky during total solar eclipses. My "Web Sight" at http://homepage.altavista.com/eye_of_god/index.html presents this thesis clearly with supporting images. My other "Web Sights" linked from http://homepage.altavista.com/treasures/index.htmlmay be of interest too, especially my 'Nazca Lines and the Eye in the Sky' "Web Sight" which presents a very plausible thesis that the Nazca Lines and geoglyphs were inspired by this "Eye of God" and other solar eclipse phenomena. I would very much appreciate it if people could send me, or direct me towards, more "rayed sun" petroglyph images and information. Any other petroglyphs that might be inspired by solar eclipse phenomena would be most appreciated as well especially SunBird images. Wishing all those who read this message a Happy New Millennium, Robin Edgar
